We are looking for volunteers to deliver activity or sports session at The Wakes building and local MUGAs and parks with Oakengates.

Joining The Wakes community team means you’ll become part of a small, friendly and welcoming team. You’ll have the chance run or assist your own activity session, meet new people and be at the heart of community development.

We are looking for individuals:

- A keen interest or sport or physical activity

Childrens Activity Coach

Oakengates Town Council’s Active Oakengates project is looking to inspire local people to be active and healthy through sport and activity. Coaches will lead, deliver or assist structured childrens community activity sessions within the Oakengates area. Encouraging and inspiring children to get active whilst having fun. This is an ideal role for those interested in sport or activity with experience of dealing with children.

Adult Activity Coach

As an adult activity Coach you will support Oakengates Town Council’s Active Oakengates project through delivery of sport or physical activity sessions in the local area. Coaches will lead, deliver or assist structured community activity sessions. Encouraging and inspiring adults to get active whilst having fun. This is an ideal role for those interested in a particular sport or physical activity as potential funding is available for training and development (Applications for external training for a particular sport or activity will be dealt with on a case by case basis and are subject to remaining funding).

Volunteer Activity Coach Role Description

Role: The Wakes Activity Coach

Responsible to: Town Clerk

Duties & Responsibilities:

The role of the Volunteer Coach is to deliver or assist a high quality coaching or activity session to community members attending activities within the Active Oakengates sport and activity project.

Duties Include:

- To be a positive role model, creating a positive and fun environment in which to motivate and encourage young children/adults to participate in sport or physical activity.

- Ensure the programme is delivered in a fun and enthusiastic way that maintains the interest levels of the children/adults attending

- Use a variety of coaching/delivery styles to suit the needs of attendees and situation.

- Maintain control of the group with positive management of behaviour

- To be vigilant at all times, with regard to the safety and security of attendees, carrying out relevant risk assessments

- Assistance with community activity events

- Complete accurate registration of attendees and secure data in compliance with the Data Protection Act


Time Commitment An average activity session lasts around 45 minutes to an hour and weekly timing of sessions can be agreed flexibly (If leading a new session). Requirements: All applicants will require an enhanced check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Training: Volunteers will receive a full induction, a training and development needs assessment with supervision and support as required. Supported by free access to a variety of free eLearning courses in areas such as: Customer Service, Health and Safety and Personal Development & Wellbeing. External funding opportunities may be available for specific sport or physical activity training and are subject to training course and funding availability.

Desirable Qualities:

Previous experience as a coach/deliverer isn’t essential, as full training will be given, however some experience of working/dealing with the public and children (for the Childrens Activity Coach) would be beneficial.
