Bounce and Rhyme Volunteer

Suitable for -

Opportunity Description

Bounce and Rhyme volunteer.

The aim of the role is to lead a 30 minute singing and rhyme session for babies and children under 5 with their parents/carers. The sessions help the children develop speech and language skills in a fun way and also has positive benefits for maternal mental health. This is an opportunity to make a difference in somebody’s day.

As part of this role you would prepare the area for Bounce and Rhyme, including moving furniture as necessary. You would lead the group in singing and doing actions for a variety of nursery rhymes and songs. You would also promote the library service at the end of the session, encourage parents to stay and choose books, and check they have had Bookstart packs. Finally you would tidy away the area.

The sessions last for half an hour and you would need to allow preparation and clear up time so approximately 1.5hrs per session. Currently the sessions are monthly however we would like the sessions to run weekly so there is some flexibility in how often you would like to volunteer. All of the sessions are in the morning starting at 10am, 10.15am or 10.30am, and ultimately there will be sessions taking place daily, Monday to Friday, across the five venues.

We have opportunites at Southwater, Wellington, Madeley, Newport and Oakengates Libraries.

We are looking for someone • Reliable • Friendly and enthusiastic • With good communication skills • Who enjoys working with the under 5’s and can relate to the very young • Who is comfortable singing in public • Over 18 years of age There would be a full induction including manual handling training, training in delivering a session and observing a session before you are left alone. You would also be given guidance about where you can learn all the rhymes. The next group training session is on Thursday 21 March 10am – 2.15pm in Newport.

In addition to the training above, you would have a named member of staff as a contact and be invited to quarterly volunteer meetings to discuss how your role is going. There would always be other staff  in the library when a session is taking place and all children would be accompanied by a parent or carer.
